Our diversity makes Albury-Wodonga a great place to live. Harmony Day is a national celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Held every year on 21 March.
The Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’.
The day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone.
Refugee Week is an annual community event held each June.
Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Refugee Week is Australia’s peak annual activity to inform the public about refugees and celebrate positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. The first Refugee Week events were organised in Sydney in 1986.
Refugee Week provides a platform where positive images of refugees can be promoted in order to create a culture of welcome throughout the country.
The ultimate aim of the celebration is to create better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia.
Refugee Week in Australia is held Sunday to Saturday of the week which includes 20 June (World Refugee Day).
